2002 Modifications
I Became a father on Boxing Day, 2001, so not planning too many events
but I've made some changes and replaced the damaged bits... More
specifically, new wings and mountings, new undertray, new front
uprights, set up mods - all to make it go quicker - hopefully. Also had
the suspension replated (again). Unfortunately with less seat time I
probably won't make the most of it for a while!
Sadly, the rear wing post was too unstable and a replacement made from
aluminium honeycomb. Unfortunately, I couldn't get this stiff enough
either. I think this is down to the long, slim design of the post. For
the rest of the season, I'm reverting to the standard rear post.
To overcome some understeer, I tried 300lb
rear springs (I had them in the garage) in place of the standard 200lb.
See the 2002 season page for report.
2003 Modifications
Work commitments prevent much action before the end of June 2003, but
that leaves a bit more budget for the winter work.
The engine was due a rebuild so, after considering the options
(including everything from R6 to turbo 750 to GSXR1000 to turbo 'busa),
I took it to Big 4 in Whaley Bridge for a rebuild and a little bit of
'improvement'. I also picked up a set of flatslide carbs from a dead F1
sidecar that would fit without modification to help make the most of the
mods.
There's will be another new wing post and I've chopped the side elements
off the undertray as they were a bit too flimsy. I've also had a new set
of wheels lurking in my garage for a few months, crying out for some new
tyres. Revolution one piece race alloys, actually lighter than the
quoted weight of the equivalent Image 3 piece split rims.
2003 Engine Specification
1089cc GSXR1100WP, JE Pistons, flowed head, Kent cams, EBC clutch plates & Barnitt springs, undercut gearbox, Keihin FCR41 flatslides, Vance & Hines programmable ignition, Dyna coils
Ran the cams in February without problems. Running in day at Curborough (finally) 10th July. Car started first time! Few teething problems, the biggest of which was the large nut that sits under the main jet (on one of the new Keihin carbs) fell out so petrol ran straight out the bottom of the carb as soon as the float filled. Also lost a rear wing end plate (found on the track). Feels fast after 10 months off!
